Availability and Time Commitment
First 12 units:
Meets Thursday nights 7-9 p.m. Attendance is mandatory.
Second 12 units:
Meets Tuesday nights 6-9 p.m. Attendance is mandatory.
Speedbuilding Workshop
Meets Tuesday nights 6-9 p.m. Attendance is mandatory.
Practice/Study Time:
You must have a minimum of 13 hours available outside of class each
week for Units 1-12. These 13 hours must be spread over a minimum of
four days; preferably six days as frequent repetition is key to
success in this program. Students are required to calendar their
practice time for the instructor. A Minimum of 18 hours for Units
13-24 to incorporate required academics to be spread out over a
minimum of four to six days.
Internship:
Internships of 40 hours are completed near the end of the program.
The student must be available to sit-in with working reporters
during their regular work days.
Language Arts Skills Court reporters deal with language arts skills on a daily basis:
phonetics, spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization,
vocabulary, and word usage. In school, reporting students study
legal terminology, medical terminology, plus all of the disciplines
related to language arts. If the thought of English courses make you
cringe, this might not be the program for you! Candidates for
admission to Realtime Center For Learning, Inc. are administered a
vocabulary test.

General Computer Skills
How much computer experience do you need to take an online course?
For participating in an online course, you must have some
familiarity with computers and be comfortable with tasks such as
emailing with attachments, saving files, deleting files, organizing
files, as well as working with word processing software.
Are you comfortable with file management: saving, deleting,
locating, and moving files on your computer?

Keyboarding Skills Must be able to pass a keyboarding test at a minimum of 40 wpm.
Applicants who score between 20 wpm and 40 wpm will be considered on
a case-by-case basis with the understanding that the minimum 40 wpm
mark must be obtained within the first 12 months of enrollment in
the program.

Realtime Center For Learning utilizes TypingCertification.com
for pre-admission testing. We do not accept tests done outside our
facility. You must test at our facility for the test results to be
accepted. However, please feel free to visit TypingCertification.com to try
the practice test and familiarize yourself with how the testing
software works.
Required Equipment Each student must possess this equipment prior to enrolling in
classes at Realtime Center For Learning, Inc. The student will be
required to bring the computer to class each week.
- Notebook computer with the following features
- Windows XP, Vista or Windows Media Center
- 800MHz or faster Pentium processor
- Minimum 512 MB RAM (1 GB optimum)
- 20 GB hard drive with minimum of 650MB available space
- SVGA monitor 1024 x 768 or higher
- Diskette drive ( This is not needed, and a separate one can
be purchased and hooked up via USB drive if you ever need one
later. Most notebook computers today don't have diskette drives
in them.)
- CD-ROM drive
- One USB port for security device (key)
One USB port for realtime to writing machines
One serial port for CaseView output (Can use USB to Serial
Converter or a PCMCIA Serial Adapter as a serial port)
- A sound card capable of recording audio and an external
microphone with its own power source is recommended.
- Built-in speakers or headphone jack
- Printer
- Full-size keyboard to use with notebook computer
- Full-size external mouse to use with notebook computer
- Headphones to plug into notebook computer
- Internet Access: DSL, cable, or other high-speed connection
- Stentura® or élan® writing machines (A writing machine is
not required for editing stations)
- Any network configuration that allows file sharing (TCP/IP
protocol recommended)
